Coffee was first discovered in Ethiopia in the 11th century and it continues to be the number one export today. Trade with Yemen was big business until the 14th century when smuggling coffee left Ethiopia in the dust. Ottoman Empire had a worldwide monopoly until the 1700’s when the Europeans began to recognize the power and popularity of coffee. Hence the calonization of Barbados and Jamaica to grow coffee. The British, French and Dutch ruled the slave trade, shipping african slaves to Brazil, the Caribbean and other regions of the americas. By the 19th century Americans demand for coffee had grown due to the Boston Tea Party and this demand increased the need for more slaves.
